I am going to cover all of that and more today in the second installment of our lever action series. When thinking about home defense, both cartridges offer way more than enough stopping power for an intruder. But generally, the absolute diameter of the bullet doesn’t matter as much as simply whether the bullet reliably expands or not. This fails to support the case as well as it should be, and this leads to cracked brass and case failure. The one I love the most is the one I have in my hand at the time. So, the cartridge that you choose should also come with great accuracy. But if you’ve got younger kids who are going to shoot this rifle, or someone who’s very sensitive to recoil or noise, you might want to lean more toward the .357. Like the .357 Mag, the .44 Mag can also be used in carbines chambered for the cartridge and is a great option for hunting purposes where the recoil will be less severe.

For the ballistic gel testing, I used synthetic gel blocks from Clear Ballistics. Big game like moose or defense against big bears?

The 44 magnum is not as powerful as some give it credit for. Here we will learn about the facets of the stopping power that helps these cartridges to work properly and because of that, they are considered some of the best cartridges for hunting and shooting. One does not always have a rifle handy, but a 44 mag handgun can always be carried. We think it is a clearer picture as to how these two cartridges differ in their potential penetration. With most rifles that are offered in both cartridges, you’ll get the same ammo capacity — both the Henrys have a seven-shot tube. If you need a .44 mag then you probably actually need a rifle. Most .45’s have mass to them, so their recoil with to-spec loads (ie, not the modern hot loads) is really quite reasonable. Your email address will not be published. Starting with the .357s, the Remington 110-grain hollow point was just moving too fast. With the rifle, it expanded nicely with decent penetration. I also, for the most part, avoided ammo that is specifically marketed for self-defense because those loads are usually optimized for handgun-length barrels. I’ve fired several rounds of .500 S&W. This is bound to be an interesting edition of State Your Case because there’s a very wide division between faithful shooters of each of these venerable rounds.

But no, it’s still no .44 mag. Next to my Hi Power anyway. I sort of follow Linebaugh’s idea of a long heavy lead bullet at modest velocity. At the muzzle, our most energetic .357 would need about 33% more energy to be on par with the best of the .44s.

The design of the cartridge is such that it penetrates quite deep. It’s basically a Magnum version of .45 Colt. We have compiled the BC for as many of the cartridges as possible from the manufacturer and listed them here. We kept the firearm weight constant for each round as well as the powder charge for rounds in each cartridge. But that, in turn, led to much better penetration.

Developed in the 1950s by Elmer Keith, the .44 Magnum improved upon the power of the .357 Magnum. The .41 Magnum it has three things going against it: I have a model 57 with a 4 inch barrel.

The disparity between rifle and handgun was even more dramatic with the .44 Magnums. They’re not going to give us the performance of a true rifle cartridge. But for EDC, I will keep my .357. Normally, I would not suggest mounting a magnified optic on a pistol caliber lever action. I would probably go with my snub security six In 357. i find it intriguing. It zipped right through both blocks. Not to mention Browning’s designs are equally civilian and military – universal really. It all has to do with the propellant.

If you do need something to give you more range, there are rounds designed for use with carbines that have much better ballistic coefficients.

How would that 0.357 inch diameter, 158 grain bullet perform in that situation? I always give them a wide berth as I don’t want to have to shoot one if I can avoid it.

I think .44 is ok for deer, but that’s about the limit.

Like everything else, you have to place your shots. They’re kind of in between. That’s my dream gun.

While there are .357mag rounds that can fill the same role, overall the .44mag might be the better option. What this number will tell you is how well a bullet is streamlined. 357 Magnum vs. 44 Magnum: In-depth Comparison. With that, we can make a reasonable estimate as to the distance where the rifle velocity is equal to the handgun’s at the muzzle. I own one revolver: a .357 magnum GP 100.

For that you have to go to Buffalo Bore, Double Tap etc. The velocity was just too low to get any expansion out of either the handgun or the rifle. Maybe just need to make a deadline or something…. That said, for people who want the smallest/lightest handguns for concealed carry, you’re not ever going to get those in anything that “starts with a 4.” Simple engineering will require a larger frame, more weight, etc. The only reason the 357 Magnum is not a preferred cartridge to a semi-auto pistol is ammo capacity. Where there is going to be a major difference between these two cartridges when discussing accuracy has to do with recoil. A lightweight .44 Magnum is downright painful to shoot and hard to control. Both of these cartridges require larger weapons to better manage the heavy recoil and might be difficult to wear comfortably in day to day scenarios. But in this country it’s about what you want. PS: Another benefit of .45 Colt over .357 Magnum is that it has recoil similar to the .357 Magnum, but with a lot less noise, flash, and blast, because it shoots at subsonic velocities, lower pressure, and the powder burns up in a shorter length barrel. Still, neither of these great rounds will lose popularity any time soon. It sailed through nine sheets of plywood and stopped on the tenth. To quell the “point” that the 44 has so much recoil that it’s tough to make quick followup shots, he knocks down a series of targets with both cartridges, as quickly as he can.

i am not intrigued by .32acp, which gives the versatility nod to the .38’s and .44’s. Oh, actually we know . It doesn’t have the lowest recoil but for a 240gr bullet is very manageable. The idea was a 200 grain lead bullet at 900-1000 fps for general duty and a jacketed 210 grain loaded to magnum velocities for use against armored targets. group. I have quite a few guns – enough that I’m actually not sure how many. Strangely though, I dont have a 357. This is one of those self-defense loads I was talking about earlier. Though it is important, putting numbers to accuracy for cartridge comparison is difficult to do. From the sectional density data, we can see that the .44 Mag rounds are going to provide you with much more penetration than the .357 Mag rounds.

The higher grain weight of this round and the amount of velocity behind it bump it up to energy levels that are even higher than three of the .44 Mag rounds. Obviously, I couldn’t cover them all, but I tried to gather a broad spectrum of bullet weights and bullet types from the major manufacturers. For my test rifles, I’ve been using a pair of Henry X Models. We think that that the accuracy of the shot will significantly depend on the experience and skill of the shooter. I would love to be able to say i have shot larger calibre handguns than these as well but have not as yet though living in commiestralia you dont often see anything much bigger anymore. For self-defense purposes, the .44 Special was and is an excellent round. The .44 Mag can be a little slower as it deals with heavier bullets, which results in heavy recoil.
