The finish was surprisingly long, interesting and lovely. The distiller describes this bottle as “a deeply intense, yet harmonious straight rye, with rich and unified tasting notes” and if it is not clear from my review, I believe that is a fitting description for this whiskey. Water brought out some extra sweetness, emphasizing the rich dark fruit notes. After 18 years in oak, this rye whiskey developed into an extremely smooth, complex, and flavorful pour. In fact, the most difficult part of this review was trying to limit my tasting notes to a reasonable length! Breaking it with a ½ teaspoon of water brought the cardamom to the front as well as making the candy corn notes bolder. Some have not been a fan of LS&B’s marketing. When tasting we went in with expectations of a bold/flavorful 13 year, higher proof rye (think Kentucky Owl Rye, Whistle Pig or even some of the High West blended ryes). Finish – this rye left a buttery mouthfeel with a long, warm finish.
