While they have taken a different approach with each album, Opeth has a very distinct and instantly recognizable sound: somber, mysterious, and very serious. I got it from a record store. The only complaint I could have with this album is the production. With "Black Rose Immortal" weighing in at around 20 minutes, it takes up the entire side of one record alone!
I was expecting grey and clear, so that was a bit of a disappointment. “Nectar” feels like an continuation of the ideas of “Advent”, with more solos present, and ending abruptly. This is a very painstakingly put-together album, and listeners will have to have some patience in order to mentally piece it all together. It works very well for them. Maybe they're right. Others are RSD releases that will be made available later via other sources - Mad Season's "Above" is a perfect example - one of the most anticipated RSD 2013 releases (at least in America), but a couple weeks from now you'll be able to buy it from Amazon (the exact same record), and the Music on Vinyl version is already available, too (mine's on order). No cracks and pops AT ALL and it sounds very full , heavy and hard hitting.

Check the RSD release list. Its simply a stunning musical epic, combining the very best of death metal and prog rock with an edge of beautiful acoustic melody. Amazing quality and the vinyl looks glorious.. Its relatively even-sounding quality may be a negative thing for some, but for me this quality is part of why I like Morningrise.

Its hard to pick a highlight from an album that is musically perfect from beginning to end, but I would have to say "Advent" is one of their best songs ever and "Black Rose.." simply cannot be compared to any other song ever written. Some will be turned off by the long songs and the cold, gray atmosphere the album gives off, but for those who are on this band's wavelength and willing to show some patience, this album will repay many, many repeat listens. Their style falls at a meeting point between melodic Swedish death metal and '70s progressive rock, though without any of the technical busyness that description might imply. If you like any of Opeth's music you can't fail to love this. Not the best quality disc I've purchased.

Laidback and still so sad. It's very atmospheric and laid back, almost soothing, which is odd given the growling vocals. The record itself is actually grey and white. Maybe this isn't their most accessible, but its a good way of getting an idea of what Opeth are about, as I would say this is the band at their absolute best. :-p. A 5 star pressing. The tracks all take their time developing, shifting back and forth from full-on metal sections (marked by distorted dual guitar riffs and growling vocals) to calm, acoustic guitar-based passages with more softly sung vocals.
