Le Carré is 85 now and has a new book, “A Legacy of Spies,” his 24th novel. I loved most of the book but I do agree that the ending is a little too abrupt and feels like it's wrapped up too neatly. A Legacy of Spies achieves many things. When Laura tells Peter she has found financial documents about Windfall stating there was not only a safe house assigned to that operation but also a housekeeper and dedicated security guard that Peter begins to share some of what he knows about the operation including the location of the safe house. The life of John le Carré by the only one who can give it the le Carré treatment. I was reminded mostly of the new Alien prequels. People who have read it - did I miss something, or is Smiley still alive at like 120? everything you need to sharpen your knowledge of A Legacy of Spies. That may be true, but the ending was the only part of the writing that I enjoyed even if it did not make up for the first couple of hundred pages.

I didn’t take this as entirely present day, as Guillam notes in the end that the events just described took place a while back. You get the sense given the iconic status Smiley gained from the Karla trilogy, that perhaps le Carré felt old George got off a little too lightly in TSWCIFTC. I was listening to him read The Pigeon Tunnel just before reading this and couldn’t help but hear his voice telling the story.
