Pascal Laugier’s notorious torture porn exploitation movie MARTYRS (2008).
I didn’t feel any of that in 2015 since the connection between them was that Anna gave her cookies as a child, so how that translates to “I will help you clean up dead bodies” is pretty far fetched. The girls were damaged people and were never going to become the martyrs they wanted. The narrative switches rapidly in the first act from initially following Lucie, to focusing on Anna, to the doomed family about to be wiped out.
Think of Tolkien swearing that Lord of the Rings had nothing to do with the spread of Nazism over Europe. Here we are back in the 2008 house with Lucie for some character development.
The shortening of this scene really took the punch away from it, and for such a pivotal moment it was a big mistake.
It’s an unsettling and rightfully polarizing film, but I'd like to take a closer look at what exactly it is saying, and how many (if any) of these claims have validity.
I do think that, ten years after its release, Martyrs strikes the chords it sets out to, while also not rising above its problems. I absolutely loved every second of it for about the first 45 minutes. Den of Geek Before Anna can help her, a group of cult members arrive at the house. Lucie discusses the hell that she went through before she arrived there, and Anna becomes a comforting presence for her as the pair grow up. There was no build up to it, and the aftermath was very confusing. Anna arrives at the behest of Lucie, but she's convinced her friend actually murdered innocent people and is pretty far gone in the process of losing her mind. Fifteen years after her arrival at the orphanage, Lucie returns to the house she claims to have escaped from and slaughters the whole family.
So again, you lose some of that connection with the characters. First half of the movie was terrifying horror gold in my opinion. Recently, she discovered an erotica she wrote in college and self-published it on Amazon because shame is so last century. My guess is that Languier felt people were misreading his film as one that condoned horrific violence against women, and he wanted to cut that kind of thinking off at the pass. Within all these rapidfire switches, the actual story being told slows to a crawl with Lucie going through frightening episodes of hallucinating a disfigured attacker and Anna calming her traumatized friend. Don't listen to the poor reviews on here - this is actually a masterpiece in horror but it's very difficult to watch.. I don’t know if the 2015 version didn’t want to put the viewers through that, but the 2008 version certainly did.
They constantly stand apart from each other and I’m not buying into their friendship at this point. For all I know, Lucie phoning Anna was the first time they’ve talked in years and with the way they’re acting towards each other that could very well be true. Which brings us to what everyone is waiting for: the infamous flaying scene.
Lucie and Anna as characters are well-developed, and their friendship remains important through the movie up to the very end.
You see scars on her arms and are treated to an intensely gory suspenseful introduction to her demon. I have no doubt that there’s some awful person who gets off to these images due to enjoying attractive women in pain but the vast majority (male and female alike) have responded with repulsion. This whole section of the movie in 2015 felt like they took jot notes of all the lines and emotions they wanted to hit then filled in the gaps, while the lines and emotions in 2008 felt organic and well deserved.
Those who cannot handle the torture are referred to as victims; those who “accept” the torture and take the chance to transcend are the martyrs they’ve been searching for. As the mother is kicked into the pit, a body flinches to brace itself for the impact of the mother falling on him. You get to know these people and become invested in them. It’s entirely possible that she hasn’t reached some higher state of being but rather is just in extreme shock.
Described by The Telegraph as the greatest horror movie of the 21st century, MARTYRS is a groundbreaking, relentlessly disturbing horror that employs shocking violence and haunting visuals to tell its bleak tale of abuse … For the most part, we the knife being pushed in then we see Anna reacting then we see a piece of skin being tossed away.
This does make the setup feel frenetic and unable to concentrate on one thread at a time, which is most likely an intentional decision. All this begs the question, has time made Martyrs more or less problematic?
In 2008, it makes sense that they would take Anna and continue the torture with her because in their eyes Lucie and the previous girl were failures. Approach with caution or snacks.

There isn’t any indication that Anna knows what’s going on and the whole scene takes about 30 seconds which is about half the time and contains 1/10th of the dialogue from 2008. I can’t really defend against the charges of misogyny and torture porn because I can absolutely see why people have that reaction.
Martyrs, on the other hand, is torture porn with a purpose.
Whether or not you can buy into that is up to you, but I did in 2008 so I don’t see why they had to switch it around entirely in 2015.
If it’s because she sees things and hurts herself, then I don’t understand that.
