Chester County's Schuylkill River Trail Phase II project will complete the 4-mile gap between Linfield Road in Parker Ford north to the Route 422 Bridge over the Schuylkill River. According to officials, the new guardrail is made out of weathering core-ten steel, which will oxidize to form a protective coating over the next several months. The new portion of the trail is being installed behind a new guardrail along the road. Work is underway to build a new, fully operating swing bridge that will meet ADA requirements and provide easy access across the river for pedestrians and cyclists. The new plan was filed Monday with the Army Corps of Engineers for a permit needed to build the bridge over land and water, along with some small dredging of the river.
SRDC and the City of Philadelphia are working to expand Schuylkill Banks all the way to the Delaware River. and walkers who use the trail on a detour that took them down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, south on 22nd Street and east on Race Street, where they eventually reconnected to the trail. The Schuylkill River wall needed to be reconstructed after a portion failed on Aug. 23, 2016, collapsing into the river. Eventually, the Schuylkill River Trail is to be extended to the Delaware River, but there are no firm plans yet for when that will be completed. Currently 5.75 miles of trail are open in Chester County. The popular trail has been closed from Paine's Park to the Race Street entrance since Dec. 6 while workers reconstructed a 75-foot section of the Schuylkill River wall. The Chester County Parks Preservation operated 5.7-mile section of the Schuylkill River Trail from the Cromby Trailhead (367 Township Line Rd., Phoenixville) north to Linfield Road at Parkerford will be closed for construction starting Monday, October 19, 2020.
There is a continuous stretch from Center City Philadelphia to East Vincent Township in Chester County. Downtown shopping areas in Conshohocken, Norristown, Pottstown, and Phoenixville. Construction alongside Industrial Highway has cleared a wide area for the trail, and the surface is being smoothed out.
