'The Night Manager' is not the usual modern action packed thrill ride, but more like quality drama series in the vein of old school quality spy thrillers. He gets a number and calls it, finds out Hamid is meeting with Roper. The novel is about Pine's preoccupation with undoing Roper's criminal enterprise, which began earlier, in Cairo, where Pine was working as the night manager at the luxurious Queen Nefertiti hotel. He says goodbye as they are leaving the next day. Corkoran is convinced that Pine is a plant, but cannot find any proof. Youssef is the driver. After being approached with details about a secret arsenal of weapons set to be sold by a British business magnate, hotel night manager Jonathan Pine is pulled into a dangerous world. Roper is a billionaire criminal who traffics illegal arms and drugs. He runs to her room, but she's already dead. Unknown to Pine, another part of Operation Limpet is that the cartel's lawyer, Dr. Paul Apostoll, is secretly an informant for the American FBI and DEA. She is the mistress of Freddie Hamid, a wealthy and powerful businessman. Effectively the viewer’s surrogate but with sharper cheekbones and a more seductive manner (in my case, anyway), Tom Hiddleston’s character is established as a smoothie from the off, strutting unfussed through central Cairo, explosions and gunfire all around, as the Arab Spring reaches Egypt (Mubarak falls later in the episode).
The first stage requires Pine to fabricate a criminal identity and cover story and head to the Bahamas, the location of Roper's primary residence. “So pleasing to wake up the f------ Germans,” he snarled (Roper, not Sugar).
While signing the paperwork Pine gathers information to convict Roper. Two smart decisions were made here. Initially introduced as a full-bore philanthropist, Hugh Laurie’s character is wisely held back until the final third of the episode.
He stays with her and they talk some more.
He handles it with class, calming one guest by sending her into the bar for a drink on the house. They arrive at a friend's house who will be gone for two weeks. (19 Apr 2016).
So I felt slightly guilty for my relief when he finally appeared, emerging from a helicopter at Pine’s alpine hotel for a meeting about *ahem* “combine harvesters”. Pine wins the confidence of Roper by "rescuing" his son from a phony kidnapping orchestrated by Burr and suffering a severe beating from the "kidnappers". He tells them about Hamid, but they don't listen. Jonathan Pine finds himself in the middle of the chaos of the Arab Spring in 2011, as he works his way through the rioting crowds to to make his way to Cairo's luxurious Nefertiti Hotel where he works as the night manager. Pine calls Sophie to tell her the bad news. Television trumps cinema once again – two film versions of John le Carré’s 1993 novel fizzled out because of the density and complexity of plotting, although I was a little relieved to find this more straightforward, so far, than the obfuscation and double-cross of much of his Cold War material. Then he asks someone to deliver it. After he leaves, he goes back to the desk and gets copies of the hotel list. Nice first episode that sets the mood and situation for the rest of the series. Her best bet is to try to convince Hamid she didn't hand over the papers. A short time later, Sophie was murdered. Angela summons Jonathan to her office, telling him that Roper is an international arms dealer who was doubtless involved in Sophie's death and asks him to go undercover to help her to trap him. She's angry. Her boss, Rex Mayhew sent them. But this felt prestigious when it could and urgent when it had to. The group is conducting business while Pine is in the room. He learns from his boss that Richard Roper is coming to the hotel for a couple of days. He takes Hamid there, but Sophie is gone. For a spy show, The Night Manager was noticeably short on snooping, swiping, and scanning in the first two episodes. Freddie Hamid is everything the protesters hate.
Hiddleston’s gradual evolution from smug remove to deep involvement, motivated first by lust, then a flickering sense of duty (he ditches the suit and tie and literally rolls his sleeves up at this point), then anger and then – the most powerful motivating force of all, perhaps – guilt, was utterly convincing. “What are you prepared to do about it?” she fired back. Every penny of the £20m budget is up on screen and Bier’s (an Oscar winner for In a Better World) are clearly the right hands to have on the tiller.
